Bird List (followed by Mammal List):

For Groves Bank, Groves Dyke and Groves Coppice only.

I expect to see or hear the following species either:

Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Seasonally, Annually or Occasionally.

Species marked 'K9' have been seen from the Kitchen windows in 2009.

Blackbird    K9            Daily all year on the lawns.

Blackcap       K8     Weekly in summer in the wood. Occasional in winter.

Black Headed Gull    K8    Occasionally over flies the wood.

Blue Tit   K9             Daily all year at the feeding station.

Bullfinch    K9           Monthly all year on fruit trees.

Buzzard    K5        Only 1 sighting, when mobbed from the leaning Ash tree by rooks.

Carrion Crow    K9      Seen or heard monthly in the wood or overhead.

Chaffinch    K9             Daily at the feeding station.

Chiffchaff    K8      Heard daily in summer.

Coal Tit    K9                Daily all year at the feeding station.

Collared Dove    K8     Weekly at the feeding station.

Cormorant       8     Occasionally (monthly) enter my airspace from their River Esk flight path.

Dunnock    K9         Daily all year under the feeding station.

Fieldfare       K9        Weekly in winter. Eats fallen fruit and hedgerow berries.

Geese    9        Flock of c140 wild geese (unidentified) flew south, high over the back yard.

Goldcrest       K8         Monthly all year in the wood and the hedges.

Goldfinch    K8      In autumn on the Thistle heads in the wood, occasionally at the feeding station.

Goosander            One winter a flock of 7 circled over the river and (accidentally)  the garden, too.

Great Spotted Woodpecker    K9      Heard occasionally in the wood or up the drive.

Great Tit    K9                Daily all year at the feeding station.

Greater Black Backed Gull    K9    Occasionally over flies the wood or loafs in the field above.

Greenfinch    K8            Seen weekly at the feeding station. Heard daily in summer.

Green Woodpecker    K9     Heard yaffling weekly, seen monthly on the lawns.

Grey Wagtail       K9     Seen monthly feeding by the pond or beck.

Heron    K8           Heard weekly at night on the River Esk, occasionally in the garden.

Herring Gull    K9    Occasionally over flies the wood.

House Martin       K8    Nests on Groves Dyke so seen and heard daily in summer.

Jackdaw    K9    Seen or heard weekly overhead.

Jay    K9            Heard weekly and seen monthly in the wood.

Kestrel    K9             Seen weekly somewhere around the property.

Lapwing    K8    Occasionally a flock wheels high over the top fields in late summer.

Long Tailed Tit    K9      Monthly in summer. Daily in winter at the feeding station.

Magpie    K9            Seen or heard weekly throughout the year. Nests.

Mallard         7         Seen occasionally in flight. Once bred in the wood when the duck and 6+ ducklings swam in the patio pond!

Marsh Tit    K9            Daily all year at the feeding station.

Mistle Thrush    K9        Heard weekly in the wood.

Merlin  K2             Seen once in winter dashing past the feeding station!

Nuthatch    K9           Seen monthly at the feeding station, heard weekly in the wood.

Pheasant    K9          One or two birds stray into the wood in winter from the fields above.

Pied Wagtail    K9        Seen monthly by the pond, the beck or back yard.

Redstart     K9        First sighting here. Tried to feed at feeding station but chased off by a Robin.

Redwing    K8      Daily in winter in the wood and on fallen fruit in the orchard.

Robin    K9           Seen daily at the feeding station.

Rook    K9            Seen or heard almost daily overhead. Rookery at Briggswath.

Siskin    K7        One or two seen on the feeders. Seasonally.

Song Thrush         K9    Heard daily in summer, seen weekly all year.

Sparrowhawk    K9       Seen weekly in wood or garden, often near the bird table.

Spotted Flycatcher    K3    Sadly, only one sighting in recent years...

Swallow      K8          Daily in summer as it hunts over the River Esk and the garden.

Swift       K8               Overhead monthly in summer. Nests in Sleights.

Tawny Owl    K8            Heard weekly, seen monthly. Noisy just before rain.

Treecreeper         K9    Seen monthly in the wood.

Tree Sparrow    K4    Seen here for the first time in Nov 2003, on the feeding station.

Whitethroat        K7    Heard singing weekly in the wood in summer.

Willow Warbler   K8     Heard daily throughout the summer.

Woodcock          7    Regularly roded over the house 10 years ago, now seen about once / winter.

Wood Pigeon    K9       Daily at the feeding station, until chased away by Flag!

Running Total: 57 (but still growing)!

Mammals:

Badger       9 Seen very occasionally trundling through the wood.

Bank Vole    K9    Seen weekly feeding underneath the bird table.

Common Shrew    K8    Very occasionally seen under the feeding station.

Fox    Seen very occasionally trotting through the wood.

Grey Squirrel        K9    'Tree Rats' often try to feed at the bird feeding station (when not killing the young trees in the wood, or the eggs and young of resident birds) but Flag soon sees them off!

Pygmy Shrew    K3    Occasionally seen briefly under the feeding station.

Rabbit    K9    Seen feeding in the woodyard most weeks.

Roe Deer    K9    Seen monthly strolling and feeding through the wood.

Stoat    K8    Seen occasionally in the woodyard.

Weasel    K7    Seen occasionally hunting through the backyard's dry stone walls.

Woodmouse    K9    Seen monthly, feeding under the bird table.
