Bayboid by Carol Brownlow
- I loved you before
- ever I saw your face.
- I knew you before
- ever I knew your gender.
- I wanted you before
- ever you were conceived,
- before ever thought of you entered
- even my unconscious mind,
- before time and galaxies.
- The point of physical birth
- was your incarnation -
- our reunion -
- when time intersected with
- your timelessness
- and your soul found clothing.
-
- For chrissakes clean your bedroom.
- Take the dog for a walk.
- It's your blasted dog anyway
- and who ends up looking after it -
- Muggins!
- Where the hell are my best black knickers?
- And my mascara's disappeared again.
- Have you done your homework yet?
- And don't leave your clothes strewn all over the house.
- Jeezus - kids!
-
- But
- I loved you before
- ever I saw your face,
- and will need you long after
- your face has crumbled into dust.

- I wrote this poem when my daughter was aged 13 / 14, very
precious but also infuriating. 'Bayboid' was her nickname and is baby talk for
ladybird. The poem means nothing more than what the words say, a poem of
unconditional love. She is cosmic.

I'm a poet of 'mature' years and a spiritual
womanist. My favourite poets are Wilfred Owen, T.S. Elliot and Shakespeare. I
love the music of the Beatles and the Incredible String Band, whose
'cuckoo-ness' has walked with me most of my life. I also love cats, the art of
Modigliani and I am an
unashamed Tolkein anorak and scholar - available for hire!
