Bayboid by Carol Brownlow

I loved you before
ever I saw your face.
I knew you before
ever I knew your gender.
I wanted you before
ever you were conceived,
before ever thought of you entered
even my unconscious mind,
before time and galaxies.
The point of physical birth
was your incarnation -
our reunion -
when time intersected with
your timelessness
and your soul found clothing.

For chrissakes clean your bedroom.
Take the dog for a walk.
It's your blasted dog anyway
and who ends up looking after it -
Muggins!
Where the hell are my best black knickers?
And my mascara's disappeared again.
Have you done your homework yet?
And don't leave your clothes strewn all over the house.
Jeezus - kids!

But
I loved you before
ever I saw your face,
and will need you long after
your face has crumbled into dust.

The Author Explains:                                                                            Back to top

I wrote this poem when my daughter was aged 13 / 14, very precious but also infuriating. 'Bayboid' was her nickname and is baby talk for ladybird. The poem means nothing more than what the words say, a poem of unconditional love. She is cosmic.

About this Author (by this Author):                                                    Back to top

I'm a poet of 'mature' years and a spiritual womanist. My favourite poets are Wilfred Owen, T.S. Elliot and Shakespeare. I love the music of the Beatles and the Incredible String Band, whose 'cuckoo-ness' has walked with me most of my life. I also love cats, the art of Modigliani and I am an unashamed Tolkein anorak and scholar - available for hire!
