FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions: Who? What? Where? When? How? Why? Click 'Refresh' for the most recent version, then scroll down. Who can see this site? Everyone with access to the World Wide Web (the Internet) - in other words, several hundred million potential readers around the world. Who can publish on this site? Anyone over 18 years of age who wants to display their own poem or story and who has a suitable credit or debit card. A poem or story by anyone other than yourself is not acceptable unless you hold the legal copyright to that work. What do you mean by a 'work?' Any poem or story. What languages do you accept? English only. Sorry, but the Editor's language skills are just not good enough to identify obscenities or potential libel in any other language. What about my copyright and other rights? This website make no claims on any of your legal rights. You must hold the copyright to the work you publish on this site and you authorise this site to publish a 'duplicate' copy of your work for an agreed period of time (while you retain the 'original' copy). See Terms and Conditions. What does it cost to publish on this website? It costs just 1 UK penny (ie: UK £0.01p = GBP 0.01) per word for 1 year on this website, with a minimum transaction of UK £5 (GBP 5). You can choose to have your work published on this website for 1, 2 or 3 years. One Renewal Reminder will be emailed to you one month before your work is deleted from the website. What kinds of poems or stories do you accept? Every kind, provided the Editor decides they are appropriate, inoffensive and not potentially libellous. What is the maximum length of story accepted? The maximum is 2,000 words per transaction, but longer works can be sent in two or more transactions. What happens when the time I have paid for ends? One Renewal Reminder will be emailed to you one month before the work is deleted from the website. What is the minimum cost to publish my work on this website? UK £5 (GBP 5). What is the difference between this website and 'Vanity Publishing?' Probably a lot of money! Yes, this is a site where you pay to publish your own work but it costs just 1 UK penny (UK £0.01 = GBP 0.01) per word per year - which works out at, for example, a mere UK £100 (GBP 100) for a story of 10,000 words. NB: The minimum payment is UK £5 (GBP 5). What if someone takes my work from the internet and claims that they wrote it? That is a risk but plagiarism can also happen if you publish on paper. I am not qualified to give legal advice but it could be a wise precaution if every author always signed, dated and had witnessed a paper version of the one and only 'Original' copy of each work and kept that in a safe place for future reference. This website will accept only a 'Duplicate' copy of any work emailed via the official 'Please Publish Me' form, thus you the author retain the Original copy as some proof of ownership. If, however, you are more concerned about your ownership of your work than you are about having it read by others, then this website may not be for you. Where is the Editor based? The Editor lives and works in the heart of the North York Moors National Park in Yorkshire, England. Just a few miles away is the historic port of Whitby, where young James Cook first learned his seamanship and then became a Royal Navy Captain and one of the world's greatest explorers. As well as its Captain Cook connections with the whole world, Whitby has also played a significant role in the history of poetry thanks to a stable boy at Whitby Abbey. In the 7th Century young Caedmon wrote a poem called 'The Song of Creation', then he composed a tune and sang the poem to St Hilda while accompanying himself on the harp - thus becoming the 'Father of English Sacred Song.' Every work on this site includes the postal address of the author, so that you can be contacted by publishers, etc. NB: If you decide to also include your email address for publication on this website (optional) you should be aware that all email addresses on the internet are automatically 'crawled' by spammers and you are likely to be bombarded relentlessly by large quantities of spam (unwanted emails). After 10 years of publishing traditional paper newsletters about environmental conservation, the Editor realised that most writers could never afford to see their words in print - and that paper wasn't actually necessary any more, as the internet can now reach a vastly greater readership at a fraction of the cost. Why donate 10% of income to Tree Aid? It seems very appropriate that our literary use of high-tech paperless publishing in the developed world will help others in some of the poorest countries in the developing world, where deforestation and the resulting desertification are major causes of poverty and malnutrition. Why can't I send my manuscript to you by post or courier? This site is designed only for 'paperless publishing' on the internet. Click Button 3. (above) and follow the simple instructions to email your work to the Editor on the 'Please Publish Me' form. NB: This is the only method accepted. Any unsolicited work received by any other means will be shredded and recycled, unread. Why should I publish my work on this website? Every writer wants their work to be read and appreciated. Other publishing websites do exist. Some of them are good and some are free - but many are difficult to use or very selective in the work they accept or completely automated and full of foul language or full of advertising to sell you something extra and / or a thinly disguised data-capture trap so that you will be spammed for all eternity. In contrast, this website was created as an easy, enjoyable and low cost platform for you to publish your own work (without any claim on your rights) to a potential audience of millions, who can read and appreciate it completely free of charge. Happy paperless publishing! |
